September 5th Mushroom Walk, Cooking, and Tasting

Forage and Feast on Fungi in the Forest - Pine Hill, NY

Join John Michelotti, Certified Mushroom Forager and Outdoor Guide, for an immersive journey into the fascinating world of mycology. This experience is designed to connect you directly with nature through the art of foraging, preparing, and enjoying the forest's hidden treasures.

Guided Mushroom Walk
We begin with a brief "Fungi 101" overview before heading into the forest. Guided by an experienced mycology educator, you will learn to:
  • Identify common native species and distinguish edible, medicinal, and poisonous varieties.
  • Understand the critical ecological roles fungi play in the Catskill forest network.
  • Practice sustainable, "leave-no-trace" harvesting techniques to protect the environment for future seasons.

Cooking Demonstration
Transition from the forest to the kitchen for a hands-on culinary showcase. You will discover:
  • Culinary Techniques: Kitchen chemistry for preparing wild and cultivated mushrooms to highlight their textures, flavors, and medicinal aspects.
  • Preservation: Methods for drying or storing your finds so you can enjoy them year-round.
  • Nutritional Value: Insight into the health benefits and medicinal properties of the specimens prepared.

Gourmet Tasting
The experience culminates in a communal fungal tasting. You will have the opportunity to:
  • Sample a variety of prepared mushrooms, such as seasonal foraged dinners or medicinal mushroom teas.
  • Taste Catskill Fungi’s high-integrity, triple-extracted health tinctures made from local wild-crafted or farm-grown mushrooms.
  • Connect with fellow nature lovers and foodies over shared stories of the day's discoveries.
What to Bring: Please wear sturdy shoes or boots for off-trail walking and dress for the weather—we explore rain or shine. You are welcome to bring a notebook, camera, or even mushrooms from your own property for identification.

Walks usually fill up, so it is recommended that you sign up in advance.

Bathrooms

There is one at the meeting and cooking location. 

Kids

Students under the age of 16 are free. 16 years old and above must purchase tickets. Adults, bring only children directly under their care, and no more than 2 children per adult.

We love them, but no. 

Cancellations

If you need to cancel, please notify us via email. Email us at least 48 hours before the walk starts, and we will issue a refund.
