100 Miles North permaculture land

Join us on the land of permaculture design specialist and founder of 100 Miles North, Brigid Walsh, for a spring workshop of mushroom cultivation.

We will start the workshop by circling up for an introduction to the day and a talk to learn the basics about mushrooms. We will then follow a path into the woods on a brief guided mushroom foraging walk where you will learn about fungal mycelia (roots of fungi), habitats, how fungi grow, and basic cultivation lingo.

Our walk will end at the cultivation space where a cultivation expert will demonstrate all the steps for inoculating a log to grow shiitake mushrooms and how to care for your log. Next everyone will be hands on as we drill, plug(inoculate), wax, and label logs.

After we have inoculated our logs for the day, we will circle up again to enjoy a cup of shiitake barley stew and sample Catskill Fungi lion’s mane extracts as we talk about cooking methods for mushrooms as well as their health properties. If people would like to purchase medicinal mushroom extracts, foraging pamphlets, or books, they are welcome to do so at the end of the workshop.

Each participant will take home one inoculated shiitake mushroom log, instructions on how to care for your log and harvest your mushrooms, and a catalog for ordering equipment for growing mushrooms.
