Created to celebrate Earth Day 2026 by Gabriela D’Elia and illustrated by Caro Arévalo, this shirt is inspired by the many morphologies of mushrooms, such as sweet-tasting Cyttaria, reaching corals, sporulating eyelash cups, powerful Psilocybe, hardy conks, and, of course, the weaving mycelium they grow from. “Kindom” is truly a fungal word, as fungi teach us about the complex interconnectedness of all life.

“Kindom”, as in the "Fungal Kindom", reimagines “kingdom” as non-hierarchical, gender-neutral, and rooted in our kinship with the more-than-human world. Instead of centering hierarchy or rulership (“king”), “kindom” emphasizes “kin”, as in kinship, relationship, and belonging.

“Kindom” honors the intricate web of connection within and between species, of which humans are only a part. Though classification can be useful, life extends beyond human ideas of utility. In recognizing our kinship, we begin to reimagine how we belong to and care for the earth. Read more about this in Gabriela's Kindom Article
