Gabriela D'Elia talks about mushrooms as she holds one up. A dozen people stand around the table covered in mushrooms listening to what she has to say at the Friends of Fungi Weekend Mushroom Retreat in the Catskill Mountains of New York.

Friends of Fungi Foraging - Menla Fall Weekend Retreat

September 5th - September 7th

Join the Catskill Fungi team for a weekend of fun, wonderment and enlightenment as we delve into the forests of Menla, and engage the fungal residents there. Take a hands-on approach to learn how to identify common fungi in the forest. Through using your senses, you will be acquainted with multiple species and confirm your IDs. Learn to sustainably harvest mushrooms in the forest, how to clean them, cook them, and eat them.  We will also dehydrate mushrooms to make teas and medicinal tinctures. This ID-focused course is designed for beginner or Friends of Fungi alumni to take a deeper dive into befriending and foraging fungi.

Participants will learn to:

-Identify common edible and medicinal mushrooms

-Cook and eat wild and cultivated mushrooms

-Preserve and store mushrooms

-Make mushroom tinctures and extracts with medicinal mushrooms

Finish the weekend with:

-Confidence in identifying some edible, wild mushrooms

-Foraging hand lens and Mushroom journal

-Medicinal mushroom tinctures

-Dehydrated mushrooms

-Deeper connection with fungi, nature, self, and friends

Many people say, "I would never trust myself to eat mushrooms from the forest." This is a healthy fear and an essential first step to safe foraging. John didn't trust himself until someone showed him which mushrooms were edible, and he was confident he could tell them apart from their lookalikes. At some point, we all learned to recognize and name different animals. Now we would never mistake a deer for an elk. One mushroom at a time, we learn to identify various species of fungi. This weekend get to know your common, easy, edible wild mushrooms. Learn to look, smell, and feel the differences between some obvious edible mushrooms that have few or no poisonous lookalikes.

No greater act connects you directly to nature and the land than confidently finding something in the forest, identifying it as nourishing food or medicine, working with that organism to prepare it, and ingesting the nutrients it has to offer you. We are happy to help show you how to trust yourself and your resources to get to know, forage, identify, and prepare easy, edible, and medicinal mushrooms.

This is Friends of Fungi's 11th session, and we are looking forward to another wonderful weekend of foraging!

Mushroom Foraging and Identification Walk with Hilltown Commons

Join a mushroom walk with John Michelotti, the founder and mycologist of Catskill Fungi.

After a brief introduction of your guide and the basics of fungi, we will head into the forest to see what mushrooms we can find. As we spot them growing on logs and on the ground, we will talk about which are edible or medicinal and which are poisonous. Don't worry, no mushrooms in New York are poisonous to touch. We will use our hand lenses to look at the details of each mushroom to learn how to identify them before collecting our specimens in foraging baskets. We will use resources like guide books and apps to identify what fungi we find. We will talk about the connection of fungi and plants, highlighting the essential functions they carry out within the forest. Exploring the many diverse ways which humans have utilized fungi throughout the past, we can see why turning to them now to solve current environmental issues is beneficial.

As we carry our baskets out of the woods, we can spread the mushrooms out on a table in groups to admire the diverse shapes, colors, textures, and sizes of fungi we can find in the forest. We will take a group photo holding our favorite mushroom and participants will have a chance to purchase mushroom books and health extracts made by John and Catskill Fungi.  After the walk, come to the pub to socialize over some locally made mushroom cocktails and mocktails.

Please dress for the weather. We will walk rain or shine. This means boots or sneakers.  Optional equipment would be a water bottle, bug/tick repellent, rain coat, or snacks. You are welcome to bring pictures of mushrooms you would like identified.

Presenter selfie at NEMF Annual Foray.

Northeast Mycological Federation's Annual Foray

Every year the Northeast Mycological Federation (NEMF) hosts an annual weekend foray in a different part of Northeastern North America with the help of the area's local mushroom clubs. This year it is in Ithica New York. Mycologists come from all around the Northeast US and Canada to be part of this 250+ person mushroom centered event. While there are many mushroom festivals, this one is for people interested in fungal taxonomy aka mushroom identification. John, founder of Catskill Fungi, has presented at the NEMF Foray multiple times and volunteered as Co-Chair in 2017 and Faculty Chair in 2023.

November Deep Imagination Mushroom Walk

This Deep Imagination Mushroom Walk is a ritual space to journey with the wildness of the soul-based teachings that arise from fungi. Fungi resonate deep in our psyches as archetypal inhabitants of dual worlds: realms above and below; seen and unseen; death and rebirth. Fungi are sacred ancestors and guides of soul cycles between heaven, earth, and the underworld. They can orient us in our soul’s journey through transformation and connection.

A gathering, a ritual, a communion. This is not a mushroom ID walk. During Deep Imagining we connect with the potency of nature and spirit. We dialogue with wild fungi as guides. There will be supervised and independent practices as partners and individuals, and sharing in circle. Spiritual wholeness is ecological. Through this walk you will deepen your relationships with life, yourself, and each other.

Deep Imagination Mushroom Walks are led by Gabriela D’Elia. She is a board member for Fungal Diversity Survey, North America’s fungal conservation nonprofit and has trained with Shamanic Reiki Worldwide. She leads walks and weekend retreats with Catskill Fungi, writes, teaches, and creates threads to connect us with ecological wholeness, with a particular devotion to the wisdom of fungi . Learn more about her on her website.
