Let's come together for a hands-on outdoor workshop where we will inoculate logs with edible shiitake mushroom mycelia (the "roots" of shiitake). Meet friends in the community as we learn how to inoculate, store, and take care of the logs. Participate in this hands on workshop and take an inoculated log home to grow your own shiitake. Once the mycelia grow through the log you can initiate fruiting, harvest, cook and have a meal with shiitake mushrooms.
Chef Ken Aldin will be providing snacks and wine after log inoculation.
Roberta Trentin will perform a sound symbiosis piece in collaboration with mycelium. Sound symbiosis is an immersive sound-bath performance that welcomes the audience to contribute to the piece with body movements, relaxation, meditation or simply be. Audience is encouraged to interact with the mycelium during the biosonification and experience a higher level of connection.
In addition, we will inoculate wood chips with Garden Giant Mushrooms together which are a great garden companion to help build healthy soil for plants while providing delicious mushrooms.
Come prepared with your mushroom questions. Inoculate 2 logs and take 1 home! You will gain the knowledge and resources you need to create your mini mushroom farm at home while connecting with people in our community.
We will have mushroom books and Catskill Fungi mushroom extracts available for purchase.
Closed-toe shoes are required. Please wear outdoor work clothes and bring gardening gloves if desired.
We will proceed rain or shine, unless severe storms are predicted!
