Mushroom Walk - Cragsmoor Free Library
10:00 am - noon
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join us for this exciting mushroom walk and learn about the ecological functions of fungi; common edibles; medicinal mushrooms; historic uses and present-day innovations of these fantastic fungi!
We will start at the Cragsmoor Free Library for a brief Fungi101 introduction. We will carpool/walk to a nearby trail and distribute baskets, bags, and/or books to take with us as we head up the easy, wide trail into the forest. We will talk about how to find and identify edible and medicinal species, and how to sustainably harvest and prepare them. We will also focus on historic uses, current scientific trends, and present-day innovations of the fungi we find. People of all ages are welcome to explore and ask questions. As noon draws near, we will walk back to the parking lot and spread out all our specimens on a table for further inspection. We can take a group photo which, along with other photos from the day, will be available on the Catskill Fungi Instagram/Facebook page. Catskill Fungi products will be available for purchase at a discount.
Please dress for the weather. We will walk rain or shine, unless a severe storm is predicted. This means boots or sneakers. Optional items to bring include a water bottle, bug/tick repellent, rain coat, or snacks. You are welcome to bring pictures of mushrooms you would like identified.
Restrooms may be available at the library but not near the trail.
See you in the woods!
